A NEW precinct larger than Barangaroo is set to transform Liverpool into the nation’s next river city.

The George River master plan has been approved for public exhibition by Council.

Residents will have an extended period to view and comment on plans for the 300 hectare site as well as attend a number of community forums over the coming months.

The prime wedge of land, bound by the Georges River, Anzac Creek and Lake Moore has until now been dominated by industry and pollution.

But the sweeping plans aim to revitalise the area, repair the native ecosystem, and turn the waterways into a thriving recreational hotspot.

The 30-ha proposed site with schools, a pedestrian walkway and green space.

Liverpool’s director of planning and growth Toni Averay said the master plan was a “game changer”.

“We’ve talked about (Badgerys Creek) airport being a game changer. Well we see that this precinct is too,” she said.

“We’d turned our backs on Liverpool. We had a rubbish tip on the banks of the river and we had all this industrial development.

“It has so much potential. It’s about awakening the potential of the river to provide amenity and recreation for the community.”

Waterfront property will be released in Liverpool, in the “Barangaroo” of south west Sydney.

The scope of the project is immense — the footprint is roughly one fifth the size of the Badgerys Creek airport site.

The precinct is even bigger than the entire suburb of Green Square.

Ms Averay said the residents would finally be able to enjoy the river weaving through Liverpool’s backyard.

“It’s really transformational for Liverpool”.

The riverfront will be rehabilitated and lined with public green spaces, where pedestrian bridges and walkways will bring people to the water’s edge.

Heritage listed items, namely the Pirelli Power Cables site, will be recast as place-makers around significant residential zones.

Public walkways will take people up to the water’s edge
But a number of issues will need to be overcome, including the location of a sewage treatment plant on the banks of Lake Moore, north of the precinct.

The plan also indicates the region is the most likely precinct in the Liverpool LGA to accommodate the extension of the Southwest metro line from Bankstown.

“By 2035 Liverpool and the Georges River precinct will become a true river city that has a vibrant mix of uses and activities,” the masterplan reads.
